St.
Tropez became "St. Trop" when the Show Business People,
Stars, Artists, Writers and Painters all fell under the spell of this charming
little port in the 1950s.
In summer one could bump into Picasso, Francoise Sagan,
Jacques Prévert and many others, With the arrival of Brigitte Bardot in the
6O's the myth was installed for good.
Since
then, St. Tropez has become the in vacation spot for Chic Parisians
and the international Jet Set.
Musee de l'Annonciade is not to be missed. This fantastic
art gallery contains many works by turn of the century artists such as Henri
Matisse, George Rouault, Maurice de Vlaminck, Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy, Pierre
Bonnard, George Seurat, Henri Edmond Cross, Aristide Maillol, Albert Marquet,
Paul Signac, Kees Van Dongen...Maurice Utrillo, Felix Valloton...Eduard Vuillard.
It was for sure famous Star Brigitte Bardot who made St. Tropez
to the In-Place in the late 50s. She had the whole Parisian young-clan with
Juliette Greco and the Sartre-Philosophie around her, including her husband's
film crew. Her husband's name was: Roger Vadim who made her as the Icon of the
60s. She lives still there and is trying to bring St. Trop back to its old
roots.

The absolute most
famous beach is the La voile Rouge. Ideally you want to arrive in your yacht at “La
Voile Rouge” – The Red Sail – on Pampelonne Beach. It’s how Princess
Grace and Brigitte Bardot would have done it in their day. Then again, why not
just walk through the front door after landing in your helicopter nearby like
everyone else. The revered beachfront restaurant has been a legend for four
decades, serving pricey French fare and the finest champagne to the rich and
famous since 1968. Off shore, yachts and
speed boats ride at anchor. Whenever someone wants to come ashore, they
blast their boat horn
to the summon the beach’s boat taxi.
Fun-in-the-sun is still
the word in this thriving artists’ colony.
While the reputation is for hedonism and you will see topless
and even bottomless sunbathers on the beach, there is also a bit of quaint mixed
in. Among the recent celebrities spotted here are Barbra Streisand, Jack
Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Oprah Winfrey, Macaulay
Culkin, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Martha Stewart, Elton
John and so many....Mischa Barton and Brandon...You need to be seen over
there... it’s a must!

There is the “Place des Lices” where movie stars
and local stars,
old St. Tropez citizens, tourists, boys& girlsget together to
play “aux boules” Provencal game
name “à la pétanque” or sip pastis, Ricard glass of rosé, under
the palm trees.
Shopping
is a pleasure in St. Tropez in the little shops and at the big open
air place markets. French & fancy.
Restaurants & dining bistros or In-gourmet places
open-air,
at the harbor or inside the narrow village streets are offering their best.
Night life is very lively and often one can see helicopters
bringing elegant guests to private parties in one of the many luxurious villas
on the bay
|
|
Discos,
beach parties, hully-gully or discrete nightlife is at your disposition.
Look around you.
You
may discover Brad Pitt dancing cheek to cheek with
Aniston (they are honey-mooning & awaiting a baby) - or grey haired
Jean-Paul Belmondo sitting at the harbor, naturally always with a very
young girlfriend and his little dog Spikes ~a nightcap for him & a cigar.
People watching is a favorite sport here in the summer, visitors
like to sit at the outdoor café, “Le gorille” or “Sénéquier” hoping
either to be seen or to see some one else. Competition is rife.
The sparkling water front is unique, café, brasserie, luxury
shops, people... the glitz and glamour of St Tropez.
|
|
Huge
yachts line up in the port rivaling to see which is the biggest, the prettiest,
the best kept or has the snappiest crew.
Only
Beautiful People hop on board. It is quite a spectacle.
The narrow streets are a maze of pastel- coloured buildings
sprinkled with shuttered windows. As you'd expect all the designer shops are
here, but so are places where you can buy a fresh “French baguette”
rosé wine bottle for cheap or the
local pastry “Tarte
Tropezienne”, a wonderful sponge cake full of
custard cream.
The
flair of St. Tropez will encircle you and you
will live this pulsing refreshing mood, you will cheerfully relax and enjoy life,
again.

If you
look hard, you might still catch a glimpse of the old days. However, the harbor
has turned into a parade of the Jet Set showing off how they like to squander
their money on things that we used to call 'boats' in the old days. Always good
for a laugh and then you can take your bottle of rosé and walk the pier to have
great views of both the harbor, the sea and the setting sun on St. Tropez.
